Stingrays Have Strong State Meet

The Southlake Stingrays swim team had three triple medalists at this year’s state meet, along with a number of other excellent performances.

Abby Privett, 12, Carson Henderson, 14 and Haley Vassios, 12, each won three medals at the Texas Amateur Athletic Federation (TAAF) Games of Texas on July 25 in San Antonio. Stingrays Program Director Lynne Anderson wrote in an e-mail that 69 of the 129 swimmers on City of Southlake Park & Rec’s swim team qualified for the state contest.

"Over 2,500 swimmers from around the state competed at the annual event, which is open to all recreational competitive swimmers in the TAAF organization who qualified to participate," Anderson said.

Henderson won the boys (13-14) 100 IM with a time of 1:02.43, the boys 50 backstroke with a time of 28.88 seconds, and was a member of the boys 200 medley relay winning team that finished with a time of 1:55.27.

"Carson was also awarded the Southlake Stingrays Swimmer of the Year for 2008," Anderson said.

Privett placed second in the girls (11-12) 50 backstroke with a time of 32.60 seconds, and first as a member of both the girls 200 medley relay (2:12.59) and the girls 200 free relay with a time of 1:57.07.

Vassios took second in the girls (11-12) 50 butterfly with a time of 32.52 seconds, and was also a member of the 200 medley relay and the 200 free relay.

Patrick Johnson, 10, and Kate Privett, 7, also won first place medals, while John Ausdenmoore, 14, and Michael Pichler, 17, each claimed a Silver, and Alexis Colon, 14, and Danielle Lepicier, 14, both brought home third place medals for the Stingrays swim team.

"All combined the Stingrays came home with gold in six events, silver in three events and bronze in five events, with many Stingrays placing in the top eight overall," Anderson said.
