Area basketball coaches have had about seven weeks to evaluate their teams in every situation. They have seen them in games that were laughers and others where the coaches didn’t have much to laugh about.

Whatever the overall record was coming out of the Sandra Meadows tournament in Duncanville earlier this week, Colleyville Heritage girls basketball coach Diana Sager had to be pleased.

For the second straight year, the Grapevine boys soccer team had the bad fortune of squaring off with the eventual state champion in the first round of the playoffs last season.

Heading into last season, the Colleyville Heritage girls soccer team was faced with the loss of most of its players with any varsity experience, a roster composed largely of freshmen and sophomore players, a new head coach and the daunting task of competing in one of the stronger soccer districts in the state.

The year 2008 was another good one for Grapevine High School, as a number of its athletes and sports teams represented the school well at district, regional and state competitions.

The Grapevine girls basketball team got off to a good start in district play last week, and even though it lost to Colleyville Heritage on Friday night, coach Steve Ganninger said he was proud of his team’s effort.

Colleyville Heritage’s 2008 will be remembered for a diminutive sophomore who just ran and ran until her school was on the map. From August until mid-November, Aly Nielson dominated just about every race that she was in.

With 2008 just about behind us, most of us can reflect upon the year with a sense of astonishment, because time does move fast.
