Lifelong Grapevine Resident Leaves Unique Legacy

The lead figure in the bronze statuary on the southeast corner of Main and College streets, is a sculpture of Mary Virginia Wall Simmons as a young girl. The sculptures are by Archie St. Clair, Grapevine artist-in-residence, and were installed in 2006.

The lead figure in the bronze statuary on the southeast corner of Main and College streets, is a sculpture of Mary Virginia Wall Simmons as a young girl. The sculptures are by Archie St. Clair, Grapevine artist-in-residence, and were installed in 2006.

Almost a century has past since Mary Virginia Wall was born on August 31, 1910. She lived her entire life in the Grapevine area, a life of service to her family, church, school and community.

It may take a while to realize that she is no longer going to be able to share her astute recollections of local history. She leaves a unique legacy.

Colleyville Police, Fire Citizens’ Academy Classes Set to Begin

The Colleyville Police Department and Colleyville Fire Department are each accepting applicants for their citizen academies. The Colleyville Citizens’ Police Academy is forming the seventh class, which runs from Jan. 22 to April 6, and will give Colleyville residents a chance to see how the police department works. People who work in Colleyville and those who belong to Colleyville civic organizations are also eligible to take the class.

Colleyville Police Officer Bill Hudgins said the course benefits the city by introducing the public to new ways of volunteering in the community and in helping make Colleyville a safer place to live and work.

Grapevine Mayor Bill Tate: Looking Forward to 2009, Says 2008 Recession Proves Wisdom of City Fiscal Policies

Grapevine Mayor William D. Tate said the downturn in the economy in 2008 was troubling and has put some city projects on hold.

Despite this, the Gaylord Texan Resort and Convention Center was able to begin a major $310 million expansion project in 2008.

D.E. Box Award Nominations Sought

Nominations for the D.E. Box Citizen of the Year Award are being accepted by the Grapevine Chamber of Commerce.

The nomination deadline is 5 p.m. Jan. 9.

Grapevine High School senior Katie Otano has been accepted to the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.

"I signed on Christmas Eve," she said. "It was a nice Christmas gift."

DEC. 18: 5:50 a.m., police were called to ReCept Pharmacy, 5100 Texas 121, to investigate a burglary, in which thieves broke a door lock [$50] and stole at least 750 prescription pills, mostly hydrocodone, a medication for pain.

Man at Grapevine’s Great Wolf Lodge Arrested for Indecency with Child

A 32-year-old man was arrested last week at Great Wolf Lodge in Grapevine for indecency with an 8-year-old girl by sexual contact.

Michael Shaw, a Cleburne resident, was arrested on the afternoon of Friday, Dec. 26, after an 8-year-old girl reported that Shaw had fondled her breast.

City Manager Candidates Offer a Choice

The finalists for the Colleyville city manager position have been narrowed to two: Jennifer Fadden, former Weatherford city manager, and Matthew Mueller, current assistant city manager in Claremore, Okla.

Approximately 100 inquiries were received with about 80 serious prospects for the Colleyville city manager position, according to Strategic Government Resources, the Keller-based executive search firm hired by the city of Colleyville.

Tree Pick-Up in Colleyville, Trash Pick-Up Delayed in Grapevine

Colleyville and Grapevine city offices will both be open on Friday, Jan. 2.

Colleyville trash collection will continue unchanged for the New Year’s holiday week. Christmas tree curbside collection, now underway in the city, will run through Jan. 9 on regular collection days.

Aborigine Basketball Players Visit Local Team

The term "road trip" became an international experience for a group of Aborigine basketball players when they flew from their homeland on a trip to America earlier this month.

The Australian team also visited San Francisco and San Antonio.

Two City Manager Finalists in Colleyville

Two finalists — one male and one female — have been named for the Colleyville city manager position, Colleyville officials announced this week.

Jennifer M. Fadden, former city manager of the city of Weatherford, and Mathew J. Mueller, assistant city manager/director of operations in Claremore, Okla., are the two finalists for the job.

Southlake Library Hosts Talks on Finance

Free financial advice is now available monthly through the Southlake Public Library’s personal finance series.

The library has invited Scott Losack, a financial advisor from Edward Jones, to present a variety of topics on the first Thursday of each month during 2009.

Correction

In the Dec. 19 edition of The Courier, a statement was incorrectly attributed to Colleyville Commuter Rail Committee member Paul Vigiletti, who voted in favor of the committee’s plan to have a rail station in Colleyville. Colleyville Commuter Rail Committee member Bart Butler, who voted against the rail station plan, made the statement, "I think it might be good for the region, but not for Colleyville."
